Weekly Email

We have a lot of items for you this week, so make sure you read all the way down to the end!  Enjoy!

From OCs:

Summer Scholars

The Summer Scholars program is going on this week.  They have been given approval to use our SWKT computer lab so they can complete homework assignments for their program.  They are also allowed to print for “free.”  If you are working in the SWKT and someone from the program needs to print, make sure their name is on the participants list and send the job for them.  Make sure you also keep an accurate tally of how many pages they are printing so we can charge their department for the printing.  Let the OCs know if you have any questions or concerns.

SWKT Phone

The phone in the SWKT is now working!  Since communication shouldn’t be such an issue anymore, the radio in the SWKT does not need to be turned on anymore.

From Phil:

Lab Assistant Hiring

We will be accepting Lab Assistant applications for Fall 2010 through the internal website (under the jobs tab) from Thursday, July 8th – Thursday, July 15th. We welcome applications from motivated, qualified individuals who you would like to refer. This is one of the best jobs available on campus in terms of work environment, skills enhancement, schedule flexibility, and opportunities for advancement. Because of this, applications are extremely competitive, and during the last round of hiring a handful of new employees were chosen from over a hundred applicants. With this in mind, think hard about whom among your contacts would succeed best in the labs.

If you would like to recommend someone for the position:

·         Make sure they can find the “Computer Lab Assistant” posting under the “Jobs” tab on the internal website: labs.byu.edu/emp

·         Have them mention that you referred them in the cover letter that they will upload.

Email me at phil_hurst@byu.edu and describe why they will succeed in the labs.

From Kim:

*IMPORTANT!*Class Request

IT Training is not scheduling any more classes for the summer unless we request them. Think hard about the classes you would love to take from IT and e-mail me immediately (before Tuesday) about what they are and your available times. Thank you to everyone who has already submitted requests. Ask for anything you want, and we’ll see what we can get for you. Ask now, or forever hold your peace.

Training raise

If you finished your training classes and associated projects for the Spring/Summer, you are eligible for a training raise. Send me an e-mail and she’ll see what she can do for you.

Hardware Class

Our wonderful technicians are wanting and willing to teach a two-hour basic hardware/tips and tricks class to anyone who is interested. It is a really useful class, and we are just trying to figure out who is interested. The class would count toward your training requirement, and it is recommended (but not required) for anyone who hasn’t had the class before. You can come with questions and they will answer all the things you’ve always wanted to know.  Email me if you have interest, and we could get some scheduled.

Potluck in the Park, a Pre-Independence Day Celebration

There will be a gathering of OACL employees at the Rock Canyon Park on the evening of Tuesday, June 29th at 6:30PM. You are invited to attend, bring some food and a guest. We can’t wait to see you all there! (Let Kim or Spencer know if you have questions about food assignments, etc.)

Note about the Netbooks

All the software on the desktops is not on the new netbooks like it used to be on the laptops. These are meant to be more portable and won't serve as a desktop replacement for those needing the larger programs found on the normal lab machines.

Hope you’re all having a great week!
