Weekly Email

We have a lot of items for you this week, so make sure you read all the way down to the end!  Enjoy!

From OCs:

Summer Scholars

The Summer Scholars program is going on this week.  They have been given approval to use our SWKT computer lab so they can complete homework assignments for their program.  They are also allowed to print for “free.”  If you are working in the SWKT and someone from the program needs to print, make sure their name is on the participants list and send the job for them.  Make sure you also keep an accurate tally of how many pages they are printing so we can charge their department for the printing.  Let the OCs know if you have any questions or concerns.

SWKT Phone

The phone in the SWKT is now working!  Since communication shouldn’t be such an issue anymore, the radio in the SWKT does not need to be turned on anymore.

From Phil:

Lab Assistant Hiring

We will be accepting Lab Assistant applications for Fall 2010 through the internal website (under the jobs tab) from Thursday, July 8th – Thursday, July 15th. We welcome applications from motivated, qualified individuals who you would like to refer. This is one of the best jobs available on campus in terms of work environment, skills enhancement, schedule flexibility, and opportunities for advancement. Because of this, applications are extremely competitive, and during the last round of hiring a handful of new employees were chosen from over a hundred applicants. With this in mind, think hard about whom among your contacts would succeed best in the labs.

If you would like to recommend someone for the position:

·         Make sure they can find the “Computer Lab Assistant” posting under the “Jobs” tab on the internal website: labs.byu.edu/emp

·         Have them mention that you referred them in the cover letter that they will upload.

Email me at phil_hurst@byu.edu and describe why they will succeed in the labs.

From Kim:

*IMPORTANT!*Class Request

IT Training is not scheduling any more classes for the summer unless we request them. Think hard about the classes you would love to take from IT and e-mail me immediately (before Tuesday) about what they are and your available times. Thank you to everyone who has already submitted requests. Ask for anything you want, and we’ll see what we can get for you. Ask now, or forever hold your peace.

Training raise

If you finished your training classes and associated projects for the Spring/Summer, you are eligible for a training raise. Send me an e-mail and she’ll see what she can do for you.

Hardware Class

Our wonderful technicians are wanting and willing to teach a two-hour basic hardware/tips and tricks class to anyone who is interested. It is a really useful class, and we are just trying to figure out who is interested. The class would count toward your training requirement, and it is recommended (but not required) for anyone who hasn’t had the class before. You can come with questions and they will answer all the things you’ve always wanted to know.  Email me if you have interest, and we could get some scheduled.

Potluck in the Park, a Pre-Independence Day Celebration

There will be a gathering of OACL employees at the Rock Canyon Park on the evening of Tuesday, June 29th at 6:30PM. You are invited to attend, bring some food and a guest. We can’t wait to see you all there! (Let Kim or Spencer know if you have questions about food assignments, etc.)

Note about the Netbooks

All the software on the desktops is not on the new netbooks like it used to be on the laptops. These are meant to be more portable and won't serve as a desktop replacement for those needing the larger programs found on the normal lab machines.

Hope you’re all having a great week!

Important Class Request

Wonderful employees,

I’m sorry to interrupt your week, but this could not wait for the weekly email on Monday.

IT Training is not scheduling any more classes for the summer unless we request them. Think hard about the classes you would love to take from IT and e-mail me immediately (Tuesday at the absolute latest) about what they are and when you’d like them offered (think about how they normally schedule classes, i.e. M/W mornings, T/TH afternoons, Saturdays, etc.) Ask for anything you want, and we’ll see what we can get for you. I would love everyone to request as much as and exactly what they want. Ask now, or forever hold your peace.

Weekly Email

Here’s the weekly email!

From the OCs

Please remember to fill out “pending orders!”

Also, remember that we have moved to the McDonald Building. The technicians are moving today, so starting tomorrow, none of the office staff will be in the JKB.

From Phil:

Remember to check your Kronos report every week (under the Schedule tab on the internal website) and to flag any late punches. One easy way to make sure that this gets done is to schedule a time every week to review your punches for the past week. Also, remember to work hard to be consistent and on time with your punches, because these factor in to your performance review and raise!

From Kim:

Potluck in the Park, a Pre-Independence Day Celebration

There will be a gathering of OACL employees at the Rock Canyon Park on the evening of Tuesday, June 29th at 6:30PM. You are invited to attend, bring some food and a guest. Put it on your calendar. Answer the poll question about it by the deadline, and Spencer and I will be getting back to you with a simple food assignment. (We are keeping it simple and easy, so don’t worry. You won’t be required to bust out a lasagna to feed 50 people).

Have a great week! Good luck with summer classes if you are taking them!

New Office

Hello everyone!

The OCs and SAMs have officially moved from the JKB to the McDonald Building!  So if you need to come talk to us, pick up inventory, drop off check sheets, etc., the OCs are in room 267 and the SAMs are in room 269.  We haven’t moved the technicians over yet, but they’ll be moving soon as well.

Let us know if you have any questions!

Weekly Email

Here’s a very short weekly email. Enjoy!

From Spencer/Kim:

To all Lab employees.  Supervisor evaluations and group leader evaluations are due on Thursday June 17th.  Please do these as soon as possible.  Also keep in mind we have an activity planned for June 29th, the lab Potluck so mark it on your calendars!

From Jason:

Remember to pay close attention to patrons using the computers on Windows 7. We want as much feedback as we can have, so keep a close eye on the patrons and let the technicians know what you see.

Thanks and have a great week!

Weekly Email

Hope you’re all having a great week!

From OCs:

Behind the Desk

Remember that the only people allowed behind the Lab Assistant desk are lab employees who are on the clock and working.  Anyone who is not working should not be behind the desk.  Also, lab patrons should not come behind the desk or use the desk stations.  Thanks!

From Phil:

Summer Schedule

Remember to pick up your hours for Summer term this coming Monday – Wednesday. If you have questions or need a reminder about your assigned time, shoot me an email at phil_hurst@byu.edu. Also, be aware that during that scheduling period, Monday-Wednesday, the hours exceptions limits will be tampered with again and could create problems with picking up shifts that have been put up for sub. If you are trying to pick up a shift that still falls under Spring term (all shifts through June 18th), and you are having trouble, email me the date and times and I will add the shift for you manually.

Fall Dress Code

Take note of the new post on the internal website that lists sales that are going on at various clothing stores. This will be updated as sales come and go so that we can all be looking good come Fall semester without breaking the bank. Please email me if you hear of any good sales and I will post them.

Note:  We will not be posting these sales in the interest of advertising or giving preference to specific retailers, rather it is meant to be a resource for labs employees to prepare for the upcoming dress code changes.

From Kim:

Mid-Semester Evaluations

All Lab Assistants and Lab Consultants will need to complete 3 evaluations about supervisors (please do not evaluate “IT Trainer” or “Lab Supervisor”). Everyone should evaluate their group leader. Evaluations will go up on June 3rd and will be due on June 17th.

Kim is Getting Married

Kim is getting married on June 11th, so she leaves town the morning of June 10th. She will be back in the office Friday, June 18th. If you need something to do with customer service, you can email oat-customer@byu.edu and Spencer Wallin will get a copy. He might be able to take care of you, but if he can’t…Kim will be back soon! If it is a training issue, email oat-training@byu.edu. She will take care of it when she gets back.

Potluck in the Park

We are tentatively planning a potluck in the park for OACL employees at the Rock Canyon Park on the evening of June 29th at 6:30PM. You are invited to attend, bring some food and a guest. Put it on your calendar. There will be more information to come about RSVP, activities, and food assignments. If you have questions, contact Kim or Spencer.

Weekly Email

Hope everyone enjoyed their 3-day weekend! Here’s the weekly email. Enjoy!

From Phil:

The time to pick up hours for the Summer 2010 schedule has come! The process will be similar to how it worked for this spring. Monday through Wednesday, June 7th-9th, you will have an assigned time to pick up hours from a template week (June 10-25) on the internal website. More details, as well as your assigned time will be included in an upcoming email.

Let Phil know if you  have any questions!

From Kim:

TIPS Revision and Creation

If you are needing some ideas of TIPS that need some revisions or want some ideas of what to create for your TIPS, let Kim know and she’ll help you out. Don’t put these off!

New Classes

More classes are on the training calendar!

From the OCs:

Media Center Paper

Please remember to leave the paper in the boxes in the Media Center lab. It makes it lots easier to count when it stays in the boxes. Also, it makes it easier for patrons to just grab their own ream, and we don’t want that! Just remember to leave the paper in the box when it is dropped off.

SWKT Phone

The SWKT still does not have a phone. Hopefully this will change soon. For now, please remember to have the radio on when you are in the lab. Also, turn the radio off at night and place it in the charger when the lab closes. This makes it much easier to communicate if we need to. Thanks!

Thanks everyone! Have a great week!
