I don’t know if you checked this but next to EN (English) there is a Keyboard icon if you click there you will notice a keyboard option that says Turkish if that is checked you will be able to reproduce what is outlined in the message below.

We will try to get that option out so people does not mess with it.

User feedback:

The Widstoe lab has been having a few keyboard issues today...

Computer 1-10, when you press the "." button, it types a french cedilla symbol (Microsoft Word)

Computer 3-8, when you press the "i" key, it types out a short vertical bar, and when you type shift apostrophe (for quotation marks) it comes out as the letter i (Mozilla Firefox)

I checked the languages on both computers, they were both set to English.

Hey Everyone!

Here is an opportunity for you to work few more hours if you so desire, but remember you can not go over 20.

Do you have a couple of people that would be willing to assist during the Sale tomorrow?  3:30pm-6pm.  If they come early they can look through the surplus area and maybe get a deal.

Thanks,

Weekly Email

Here’s the weekly email. Enjoy!

From Phil:

Applications for the Shift Supervisor position will be open from Monday, October 4th – Sunday, October 17th. Everyone is encouraged to apply!

Applications for the SAM of Training position can be found on the internal website and will be available through Wednesday, September 29th.

Here are some tips and reminders for finding a sub for a shift that you can’t work:

·         Start looking early – put up your hours at least one week in advance.

·         Use the “Find Sub” tool and communicate personally with those employees who you know are available at that time – email, call, text, and talk face to face with people.

·         Be proactive in picking up others’ shifts – they’ll be more likely to help you out, not to mention that this is an important part of your semester performance review.

·         Don’t plan or schedule things during work hours until someone has physically picked up your hours on the website.

·         Remember that if no one picks up your hours you are responsible to work them.

From the Techs:

Windows Transaction Tool will not be fixed in the SWTK computer lab because we are phasing out this program.  Until it is totally gone the only computer lab that will have Windows Transaction Tool will be the desk station in the MCL.    We are sorry for the inconvenience this causes on those working in the MCL, but are grateful for your help in charging people’s accounts.

From Spencer:

Thanks for coming out to the Customer Service Workshop.  I hope you all enjoyed it.  Remember we want to be happy at work, and give explosive customer service.  Be sure to talk to the lab patrons, especially when you are going to their computer.  Also be the first to say hi when someone is approaching the desk.  You guys are great, and keep up the good work!

From the OCs:

If patrons ask to use headphones in the WILK there are a few in the bottom drawer of the desk. Feel free to open them and let them borrow them.

Our OACL Trainer, Spencer, has his own phone number. If you ever need to try to get in touch with him or leave him a voicemail, his number is 422-9045.

Have a great week! Let us know if you have any questions.

SAM of Training Position

Wonderful labs employees,

I’ve been offered a job as a research assistant that I have decided to take.  The position will be crucial for my future career goals and it is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.  I have loved working for the labs and getting to know every one of you.  I will still be around using the labs, so I’ll be seeing you often, I’m sure.  You are all wonderful employees, and it has made this job a pleasure and (also very difficult for me to make this decision).

This also means that there will be an opening for the SAM of Training position effective immediately.  You will find the application on the jobs tab and it will be available through next Wednesday, September 27.  Interviews will be held on October 4-5, and the start date will be October 11.  We would encourage all interested employees who meet the jobs qualifications to apply.  Please see the job description under the jobs tab.  If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me or give me a call (217-299-0537).  All applicants must be willing to make a two-semester commitment to the position to be considered.

I’ll miss working closely with you all and wish you the best.

Jesse

From the OCs:

Tape Dispensers and Staplers are going missing frequently. Please encourage patrons not the remove them from where they are normally kept.

When Signature Printing drops off new toner, please try to remind them to pick up any used toner that is in the labs. Our old policy about picking up used toner has been changed. It is now more the Lab Assistant’s responsibility to remember to send used toner with Signature Printing as often as they remember.

From Jesse:

Training Classes Dress Code

The dress code changes also apply to all training classes. Please be appropriately dressed when attending any training classes.

Training Raise

As soon as you finish the minimum required instructor-led training for the semester (this includes having the competency project receive a “pass” grade), e-mail Jesse to receive your training raise.  If you do not e-mail Jesse, you will not receive the raise.

From Phil:

To get audio to work on windows 7 machines with internet browsers or media players (such as youtube, Pandora, or itunes) you must have the headphones plugged in before you open the web browser or program.

Available Shifts

Take a look at the “Available Shifts” announcement of the home tab to see if you can cover any of the posted shifts.

Here is the general conference schedule for the next two weekends:

·  Saturday, September 25, 2010 – LDS Relief Society broadcast from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. MDT. – Please pick up hours for the ladies who need to attend this meeting.

Weekly Email

Here’s the weekly email. Enjoy!

From Jesse:

Training Classes

All the classes that will be offered are on the internal training calendar.  This Friday, September 17 will be the Training Registration Deadline.  By this date you must be registered for at least four hours of training.  You can always sign up for additional training after the deadline or switch classes (if you confirm the switch by e-mail with Jesse).  Not all of the rooms for the classes are correct yet, so be sure to check back on the calendar to ensure you show up to the right place as the class approaches.

Pharos Printing

Everyone should now be logging in with their own credentials to the desk station computers.  Only use the oalassist for the Pharos Remote logon ID.  If you log into the desk station with your own credentials, you will be able to run the Pharos Remote.  The oalassist is not an administrator on the domain, meaning you will be unable to run the Pharos Remote.  If you have questions, contact one of the SAMs or the technicians.

From Phil:

Great job with the dress code last week everyone! You all are looking great. Keep it up, and remember that the Shift Supervisors will be enforcing the policy strictly.

From Spencer:

Customer Service Worksop

The Customer Workshop is on the Training Calendar now.  Remember that every employee is required to take this class.  There are three different days and times so if you still have conflicts after that please email Spencer.  Also the room where we will do the workshop will not be listed on the training calendar, but will be emailed separately.

Have a great week!

Weekly Email

Hey Everyone,

Here is the weekly email! Enjoy.

From Spencer

I just wanted to remind all of you to be careful when checking in netbooks.  Make sure that you check the little box for each accessory.  There have been a lot of cases where this doesn't happen and it automatically checks out the accessories to the patron, who has actually just turned them in.  Just be careful when checking them in.  Thanks much!

From the OCs

Remember to send us an email if you need a new name badge. If you would like a new picture, do the same and we will figure out a time for you to come in and have your picture taken.

End of Week update

Thanks for the great first week.  You’ve all done wonderful jobs.  There were just a few things that we wanted to get out to the labs as soon as possible so please read.  This stuff is important.

From Phil:

As of this morning, all of the shift trades that were arranged after orientation have been entered on the schedule. Please look ahead at your schedule and make sure that you are aware of these changes. If there is still a shift that you need to trade or give up email me (phil_hurst@byu.edu) by Saturday at midnight with the following information:

·         Day of the week of the shift

·         Time of the shift

·         The lab the shift is in

·         Indicate whether the shift is one that you CANNOT work (and provide the reason) or if it is just one that you DON’T WANT to work

·         Indicate whether you are looking to trade the shift or to give it up

General Issues:

Technical Issues – As many of you may have noticed on the home page of the internal website there is a new section labeled “Major technical issues.”  We are going to use this to keep all employees informed about current problems that we know about, and are working to resolve.  We also want you to submit as feedback any issue that we don’t have up there already, or any new issues that may arise.  Be aware that “Major technical issues” refers to issues not specific to a single computer, but something that is happening in every lab.  All specific computer related issues should be submitted as ticket through the Support Desk (link on internal website).

Printing – Because of the current issues with printers we are changing the way we report printing problems.  After talking with Darin, he decided that instead of calling Signature Printing when we have a problem, we will call 422-4000 instead.  When you call, explain the problem, and make sure that they make a ticket related to the problem.  This ticket will get sent to Signature Printing, and if not fixed or addressed within two days the status will be changed to stale, and upper management will be notified (i.e. Those who manage signature printing).  We hope that this will help resolve the issues with broken printers.  Be sure to call 422-4000 with every problem, and every occurrence of a problem.  The more tickets that get submitted the more likely they are to be fixed.

Labs

I really would like each of us to be proactive, instead of reactive.  If there is more than 1 individual managing the lab, I would like one, and you could take turns, to walk around and make sure everything is working correctly.  And, that everything is neat and tidy, i.e. cables, etc….  Also, ask if patrons need help with anything as well.  If they get tired of us asking, then we will stop, but remember, we are there for them.

Thanks,
